The New and Improved Soda Wars

Remember New Coke, Classic Coke, Pepsi Clear and all that jazz from the ’80s? Well it’s heating up again in the soft drink arena. A few months ago Coke announced that Dasini water was going to be bottled with greener packaging. This packaging contains 30% petroleum free materials. In a game of one-upsmanship, Pepsi just announced that they have invented a 100% petroleum free bottle (it’s 100% PET). Green packaging has become the battleground for the new cola wars.

Recycling Flexible Laminates Used in Packaging

Kraft Foods and Nestlé have partnered with Enval to support the construction of a recycling plant for plastic and aluminum-based laminates used in packaging foods. This is said to offer a recycling route for flexible laminate packaging that to date has not been recyclable. The technology is capable of handling packaging material from the production and filling processes or as post-consumer waste. Furthermore, the technology is carbon-neutral.

Packaging With Disabilities

About a third of the new hires at a just-opened Procter & Gamble packaging facility in Auburn, Maine will be people with physical and developmental disabilities and disabled veterans, the company said Wednesday. The packaging center will house 60 employees when hiring is complete.

One of the downfalls of buying in bulk or from overseas is that the individual packaging of the items may not be customer-specified.
